the best advice i ever got collaborative project
above is my piece for penelope dullaghan's project. this was advice given to me (on multiple occasions) by my mom when i was little. and it has turned out to be the best bit of advice i have ever received as it has shaped me into who i am today.
she'd encourage me to turn off the television and do something creative and constructive with my time. i'd go outside and ride my bicycle in the fresh air. i played the violin & taught myself how to play the keyboard. i'd open up the encyclopedia and turn to a random page and learn about a new subject. i would wander out into the fields of my grandparent's farm and explore every square inch of the creek, the pasture & the old barns. i would write stories and poetry. and of course, i would make art.
all of my adventures away from the television, gave me the inspiration & knowledge to make art. it sparked my interest in seeing the world, learning how things worked and motivated me to create my own things.
this little piece of advice is why i am an artist today. it is why i am an active participant in life and is why i savor and enjoy every moment life has to offer: living my own life, instead of watching other people's lives on t.v.

there i go drinking paint water again
is it just me, or do you ever accidentally dip your paint brush into your coffee/tea/soda? i should know better by now, and should have my drink placed far away from my water cup. but no, i set my coffee cup next to my paint water cup and then next thing i know, i take a sip and yuck! yet another cup of ruined coffee. but chad assures me that it is only acrylic and it is non-toxic...

garden journal
i made this garden journal for my friend vicci. it is made up of 4 pieces of bookboard, bookcloth in two different colors, colored paper for lining & for the pages, some rub on decals i found in a paper shop, a few pages recycled from an old gardening book (that she actually gave me 2 years ago!) & two screwposts. all of this was assembled with a hand drill, pinking shears, a ruler, pva glue & an exacto knife.
i was trying to make transfer decals with my own illustrations using lazertran paper, but it was not working well with the bookcloth. it did not stick and the edges curled up. so i had to use store bought decals. but it is mostly homemade!
i hope to make some more books this weekend. it is so much fun to create a book from scratch!
