vintage baseball pillow
ingredients:
* approx. 2 yards of fabric, * matching thread, * photocopy of your image, * sheet of transfer paper, * embroidery floss, * embroidery needle, * embroidery loom, * 17" pillow form, * sewing machine (recommended) |
directions:

find your favorite team logo and photocopy it to the size that you want. layer the photocopy printout on top of the transfer paper. secure to fabric using pins. |

using a pen with medium pressure, trace over the photocopy to transfer the image to the fabric, taking care not to pierce through paper.
|

place fabric in loom and start embroidering along lines in an "in-and-out" motion. |

then go back over lines to fill in gaps. this is meant to look homemade, do not sew perfectly straight lines. add a border or other element to draw interest to your design. (i used a simple line border to contain the shape)
|

measure design on fabric to center image. cut out a little more than a 17" square... leaving room to sew together. cut out another square of plain fabric of same size. place fabric on top of each other, embroidery side facing inwards. using a sewing machine, or by hand, sew along 3 sides of the pillow. turn inside out, stuff pillow form in open side, and then stitch pillow shut. |

the final pillows- embroidered and sewn.

helpful hints:
use a good quality, soft pillow form. i used cashmere-filled. use buttery soft fabrics. don't go for the usual "team colors". i used navy blue thread for the astros, but a dark brown for the cubs. just because a team's colors are red & blue does not mean you have to use red & blue. originally i made the mistake of using "cubby blue" fabric and white embroidery floss because i thought it would be nice to match the team's colors. however, after trial and error, i realized that the blue was too loud, and not that style i wanted. that was when i changed to cream colored fabric and brown thread. this made a huge difference. |
